Caherdaniel and Derrynane
The road from An Coireán (Waterville) to Cathair Dónall (Caherdaniel) and Doire Fhíonáin (Derrynane) is through the awesome Coomakista Pass with its magnificent views high above the Kenmare River, Scarriff and Deenish Islands. Scarriff Island holds Bronze Age and monastic remains while the three sentinel rocks in the sea are known as the Bull, the Cow and the Calf. The Ring of Kerry road descends to Doire Fhíonáin (Derrynane) and Cathair Dónall village. Derrynane House is now a National Monument containing a collection of Daniel O’Connell’s personal possessions as well as an audiovisual presentation on his life and times. Copper mines were worked in Cathair Dónall over 4,000 years ago and an old butter road which runs from the village is now part of The Kerry Way walking trail. This pretty village is an excellent location for angling, swimming and diving.
