The Gaeltacht Island of Oileán Chléire (Cape Clear) defies the Atlantic Ocean, near Roaringwater Bay, off the tip of South-West Cork. An eight-mile ferryboat trip from Dún na Séad (Baltimore) past Sherkin Island and its internationaly known marine research station, brings the visitor to this awesome ocean outpost. This high, rocky island is the birthplace of St. Ciarán of the sixth century and whose holy well and church can still be visited. As well as being a keeper of the treasures of the Irish language and Irish music, Cape Clear fascinates lovers of wild life. Kittiwakes, puffins, cormorants, gulls and a host of other native and rare species can be observed from the Cape. This unique Atlantic island is also a safe haven for ocean-going yachts and boats as well as commercial fishermen.
