An Rinn (Ring) and An Sean
Phobal (Old Parish) form part
of the South East Coastal
Drive from Wexford Town in
the east to the village of
Ardmore in the west. This
route, with its distinctive
signposts, takes the visitor
along the coast road through
An Rinn and Helbhic (Helvick
Head), with its picturesque
harbour and landmark
monument to the memory of
the "Erin's Hope" a ship which
played a significant part in the
preparation for the Fenian
Rebellion in Ireland in 1867.
Early on the morning of June
1st 1867, the "Erin's Hope"
arrived off Helvick Head,
skippered by Captain
Cavanagh and carrying forty
Fenian rebels. Thirty two of
the Fenians were transferred
to a hooker (traditional west
of Ireland sail boat), owned by
fisherman Páid Mór Ó Faoláin.
He put the Fenians ashore on
the beach near Baile na nGall
pier. Captain Cavanagh and
the "Erin's Hope"
subsequently set sail for
America, evading British men
