No visit to this area would be complete without walking or climbing
some outstanding mountains. The routes are generally uncrowded,
but it is still a pleasure to meet and chat with other walkers along the
way. Most routes are designed so that any reasonably fit person can
walk them. However, this does not stop them winding through
spectacular mountain scenery, magnificent glens and valleys.
Bealach na Gaeltachta (The Gaeltacht Way)
Bealach na Gaeltachta is a set of long distance walking routes
developed to the standard of a national way marked way. The long
distance walking route is made up of four circular routes, three of
which interlink. Each route is between 50-70kms in length and
encompasses mountain, riverside, seaside and forest habitats. Most
sections of Slí an Earagail and Slí na Rosann are on track and minor
roads. Parts of Slí na Finne and Slí Cholmcille cross upland or
bogland areas with no path but provide excellent landscape and
seascape views. The scenery is spectacular and walkers have an
excellent opportunity to sample the uniqueness of the Irish language
and culture in the area.
